Stories That Shine: Book Recommendations for Kids with Autism
Every child deserves to see themselves in the pages of a book.
For kids with autism, stories that reflect their unique experiences can be incredibly powerful, since they help build confidence, encourage understanding, and remind them that they’re not alone.
At ABLE (Applied Behavioral Learning Experiences), we’ve put together a list of children’s books that celebrate neurodiversity, promote empathy, and offer gentle guidance through relatable characters and adventures.
These stories are a great way to connect with your child and support their emotional growth at the same time it helps them discover the power of thinking differently or navigate friendships:
“All My Stripes: A Story for Children with Autism” by Shaina Rudolph & Danielle Royer – This beautifully illustrated story follows Zane, a zebra with autism, who worries that his differences set him apart. With the help of his loving mother, he learns that his stripes (unique traits) make him special! This book is a great tool for building self-esteem in children with autism.
“A Friend Like Simon” by Kate Gaynor – A heartwarming and easy-to-read story about friendship and inclusion, this book follows a young boy who befriends Simon, a new student with autism. It’s a great read for teaching children about acceptance, kindness, and the importance of understanding differences.
“My Brother Charlie” by Holly Robinson Peete & Ryan Elizabeth Peete – Written by a sibling of a child with autism, this book provides a relatable perspective for families. It tells the touching story of Charlie, a boy with autism, and how his sister learns to appreciate his unique way of seeing the world. It’s an excellent book for siblings of autistic children.
“I See Things Differently: A First Look at Autism” by Pat Thomas – This is a great introductory book for younger kids who want to learn about autism. It explains why some children may act differently and how everyone can be a good friend to someone with autism. The simple language and engaging illustrations make it a gentle and positive way to introduce autism awareness.
“The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin” by Julia Finley Mosca – An inspiring true story of Dr. Temple Grandin, a world-renowned scientist with autism. Written in a fun, rhyming style, this book shows kids that thinking differently is a strength. A perfect choice for encouraging young readers to embrace their own unique abilities.
